Nobody books this trip because they want to. If someone you love is being treated in Athens, the thing that matters is not the terrace — it is how long it takes to get back to them, and whether you can sleep and eat somewhere that is not a corridor. The Ippokratio’s nearest gate is round the corner from this door — two minutes, and about five to its main entrance.
On foot from the front door, measured to each main entrance: the Ippokratio at 380 m — though its nearest gate is round the corner — the P. & A. Kyriakou children’s hospital at 460 m, the Areteio at 850 m and the Alexandra at 890 m — all of them under fifteen minutes. Then the Aghia Sophia children’s hospital at 1.2 km, the Aghios Savvas at 1.3 km, the Laiko at 1.4 km and the Evangelismos at 1.7 km. The 401 Military Hospital, the Sotiria and the Gennimatas are further out, and a short taxi rather than a walk.
That is not a coincidence of marketing. The flat is in postcode 115 27, which is the same postcode as the Ippokratio, the Laiko and both children’s hospitals — this is the Goudi hospital quarter, and there are more than thirty hospitals and clinics within two and a half kilometres of the building.
Visiting hours end and check-in desks close, so the practical things matter more than usual. You let yourself in with a lockbox at whatever hour you get back, from 15:00 on the first day. There is a kitchen, which is what makes it possible to cook something specific for someone who is not eating well, and a washing machine with detergent, which is what makes a fortnight workable. The bakery is downstairs for the morning you have no time.
It is a whole flat, not a room: one bedroom, a sofa bed and a terrace to sit on at the end of a day you did not choose. If you need to stay longer than the calendar allows, or need a quieter arrival than the form provides for, write to us.
